Kira-Kira - Cynthia Kadohata A sweet, tender story about a Japanese family that migrated south during the 1950s. I know it was a Newbery winner, but it did not "stand out." A girl deals with her sister's terminal illness during a very racist time in America. Yet, I felt the premise had been done before. The only thing that grabbed me was the fact that I know plenty of families that migrated from countries that faced even harder circumstances.
